Big Changes at the BBA

With the growth of our membership and increasing program interest, we are excited to announce some organizational changes. Lynne Marlor will become the new Chairperson of the BBA. Lynne has been instrumental in the development and delivery of our BBA Events Program during a very challenging time. Lynne comes to the BBA with broad financial experience, having worked on Wall Street for the last 30 years and as a graduate of Oxford University’s Said Business School’s Blockchain Strategy Programme.

As part of these changes, Mike Wise, who we wish to thank for his leadership as Chair, will take on the new challenge as Head of Partnerships. With Lynne’s Leadership and Mike’s Partnership focus, the Board is embarking on a new phase of the development of the BBA, continuing our mission to transform Massachusetts into a global hub for blockchain technology.

Last week was outstanding, and we’d like to thank all of you who came out to support the students participating in the Gateway to Blockchain Entrepreneurship: Final Pitch Night. This year’s event featured 25 students from 7 Boston-area universities, plus 19 contributing organizations. Special thanks go out to Drew Cousin, Caroline Dennis, and Sam Nathans for their hard work putting together this first-ever summer session for students.

We’ve also been closing following the progress of the Wyden-Lummis-Toomey amendment, which is meant to narrow the scope of the amendment to narrow a cryptocurrency tax reporting provision. The amendment would broaden the definition of a “broker” and could make possible a massive increase in financial surveillance.

The Boston Blockchain Association, together with over 100 other blockchain organizations, wrote to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urging them to support the Wyden-Lummis-Toomey amendment to the bipartisan infrastructure bill.

The Wyden-Lummis-Toomey Amendment addresses a significant concern raised by the bill as currently drafted by removing the obligation to report from those network participants who don’t have—and shouldn’t have—access to customer information. It does so without affecting the reporting obligations placed on brokers and traders of digital assets.

Fenway Park

Boston Blockchain Events Week of July 26, 2021

Fenway Park, Boston

It’s an exciting week for the Boston Blockchain Association as we host a “double-header” this coming Thursday. First off, will be the Blockchain and Entrepreneurship discussion, hosted by Sam Nathans, founder of SourceSurge and Inteurity, and Mike Wise, Chairman of the BBA Board and a massive blockchain proponent, in a “fireside chat” format. Join them to learn how blockchain creates new business opportunities.

Immediately following that, we will have a Crypto Investing Workshop hosted by “Sir” John Hargrave, publisher of BITCOIN MARKET JOURNAL, author of the bestselling BLOCKCHAIN FOR EVERYONE, and ranked #1 on the list of Top Blockchain Speakers. It’s going to be two hours packed with blockchain and crypto knowledge, and we’d love to have you all join us.

We’d also like to mention the exciting news from our partner BankProv, formerly Provident Bank and a leader in digital banking, and one of the few U.S. banks to offer cryptocurrency deposit accounts to its customers. Last week, the bank announced the launch of ProvXchange, a 24/7 payments platform that allows two customers on the platform to pay each other instantly. It’s a feature that customers have been asking for, and a way for the bank to make using cryptocurrencies more accessible and appealing.

Speaker

Boston Blockchain Events Week of July 20, 2021

Speaker presenting in front of an audience.

First of all, we would like to thank everyone who came out last week for the first in-person BBA social event of the year. We’d also like to send our thanks to Jim Cunha of the Boston Fed for the excellent talk given at the event.

The coming week will feature a workshop by the Boston Chinese Investment Club discussing the role of traditional institutional investors in the blockchain and crypto space. Additionally, make sure you mark your calendar for the following Thursday when the Boston Blockchain Association has a doubleheader in store. First is an hour-long discussion on Blockchain and Entrepreneurship. Then, join us for a Crypto Investing Workshop, where you’ll learn a lot about crypto investing, security, accounts, and much more!

Speaking of the role of traditional institutions in cryptocurrencies, Cardano is working with traditional NGOs to provide help to thousands of children in Rwanda. Save the Children in Rwanda has embarked on a new project that aims to ensure the gains associated with blockchain reach the world’s most vulnerable children. Save the Children in Rwanda can now fundraise in Cardano’s cryptocurrency, ADA, having installed a Managed Account Service that allows ADA donations to come directly to the project without intermediaries. Over 22,000 ADA, worth nearly $30,000, was donated through the system within hours of its launch.

How Traditional Institutional Investors Navigate the Complex Blockchain & Crypto Asset Class?

Friday, July 23, 2021, 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM EDT (US Time)
Saturday, July 24, 2021, 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM EDT (China Time)

The last two years or so saw major changes occur in the traditional financial world. We saw traditional banking giants such as Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs formally take the plunge into the crypto space by offering their clients a variety of crypto-based investment products. Goldman Sachs, for example, began trading Bitcoin-linked derivatives. JPMorgan and Visa, two globally recognized mainstays of the financial world, also entered the crypto space by offering trading, investment, and settlement services using cryptocurrencies. Join the Boston Chinese Investment Club as they look at the ways traditional investors are getting involved in blockchain and crypto.
